THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS AND THE NORTHERN PLAINS (PART 2)
Good Morning Students
I hope you have written the new words in your notebook.
Yesterday we learnt that The Himalayas are divided into three parallel ranges:
- The Greater Himalayas, called Himadri.
- The Middle or Lesser Himalayas, called Himachal.
- The Outer Himalayas, called Shiwaliks.
Today we will discuss the Himadri and Himachal in detail.
Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to:
- differentiate between Himadri and Himachal on the basis of their:
- Height
- Temperature
- Cultivation
- Population
THE GREATER HIMALAYAS
HIMADRI
- Northernmost and highest range of Himalayas.
- The mountain peaks in the Himadri are always covered with snow.
- Highest mountain peaks of Himadri that lie in India are: Kanchenjunga, Nanda Devi and Nanga Parbat.
- Mount Everest which is the highest mountain peak in the world also lies in Himadri in Nepal.
- The temperature remains very low so cultivation(caring for or raising plants) is not possible and this is why people do not live in this region.
THE MIDDLE OR LESSER HIMALAYAS
HIMACHAL
- The Himachal lies between the Himadri and Shiwalik ranges.
- The mountains are not as high as the Himadri.
- The temperature is also not as low.
- Winter are cold here but summers are mild(not very cold).
Now look at the picture below.
This is Rohtang pass (a route through a mountain range used to cross the mountains)
This pass connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh.

- The mountain slopes of the Lesser Himalayas are covered by dense(very thick) forests of Pine, Oak, Deodar and fir trees.
Pine Fir
Deodar Oak
- These trees provide wood, fodder (food, especially dried hay or straw for animals and fuel (material such as coal, gas, or oil that is burned to produce heat or power).
- The slope of the hills are used for Terrace Farming (farming practiced on slopes that have been cut into steps)
The picture below shows Terrace Farming on Hills.
- Fruit orchards (a piece of enclosed land planted with fruit trees) and tea plantations are present in this region. Therefore, this region is well populated.

It's now time to do some written work in our notebook.
In our last class we had written four words and their meanings.
Today we will write two more. You can continue writing on the same page.
