Part 5 The plateau and desert region

Hello boys!!

We were learning about the Great Indian Desert. We learnt about the climate in previous class and today we will know about the vegetation and wildlife in Thar desert.

The Great Indian desert is also called the Thar desert.

You must be thinking that what is the meaning of vegetation?

Vegetation is a general term for plants of a particular area. Due to very less rainfall and scarcity of water, vegetation in Thar is scanty.

(scanty means small or insufficient in quantity or amount)

Let's watch a video to get a better idea of this topic..

Alright!! So now you know about the plants of the desert. Plants like cactus, keekar and babul grow here as they require less water. They have long roots that reach the deep underground water.

We've also learnt about the oasis in the video. An oasis is a fertile spot in the desert where water is found.

Hope you all are reading the chapter from the book as well. Today, we will learn about The Great Indian Desert. But first let's understand what a desert is....

Deserts are areas that receive very little or no rainfall. The temperatures here are extreme, either very hot or very cold. There is little vegetation growth in such regions.

Let us learn about The Great Indian Desert...

  Sand dunes 👇

Camel is the main animal of a hot desert region.

Physical features of the Great Indian Desert

Thar Desert is covered with sheets of sand which form sand dunes at places.

Let's know a little bit about the climate of this region

Now we will watch a video for better understanding!!

Task 1

(Continue writing after the third question in your S.St notebook) Just mention today's date.

Q.4 Why is camel called the 'ship of the desert'?

Ans.
Camel is called the 'ship of the desert' because it is the only means of transport in deserts. It helps people to go from one place to another easily. It has humps which stores food and water and helps the camel to survive in the desert region for long and dry periods.

That's all for today!! See you in the next class.
