THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS AND THE NORTHERN PLAINS (PART 5)
Good Morning Students.
We have learnt all about The Northern Mountains in the previous blogs.
Today we will learn about The Northern Plains.
By the end of the class, you will be able to:
- Locate the northern plains on the map of India.
- List the states that lie in the northern plains.
- Comprehend the advantages of plains.
THE NORTHERN PLAINS
Plains are large stretches of flat land. The Northern Plains are also known as The Indo-Gangetic Plains.
This is the largest unit of the Great Plain of India stretching from Delhi to Kolkata in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal covering an area of about 3.75 lakh sq km. The Ganga is the master river after whose name this plain is named.
The Northern Plains are located to the south of the Himalayan range.
The dark green portion in the map below shows The Northern Plains.
The Northern Plains extend from Punjab in the west to Assam in the east covering states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, west Bengal and Delhi.
These plains are extremely fertile because of two reasons:
- The perennial rivers from the Himalayas pass through these plains, keeping them well drained.
- These rivers bring along with them pieces of rock, sand and silt. The finer silt that gets deposited on the banks of the rivers, forms the highly fertile alluvium (sand deposited by rivers and floods).
The fertile plains make agriculture profitable.
People prefer to settle down in the plains because of the following advantages:
- They are usually fertile (capable of producing crops in large number)
- They have a climate suitable for agriculture (growing crops).
- Construction of buildings is easy on plains.
Most industries develop along the banks of rivers because of easy availability of water.
Plains are generally well-populated (many people live here) and grow into cities.
Now try and answer the following questions. (To be written in the notebook)
Q1. What is the other name given to The Northern Plains?
Q2. Name the states the lie in The Northern Plains.
Q.3 Define Plains.
Homework:- Read pg - 25 and 26.
That's all for today.
Take care. God Bless!!
